Our Story

Kristel Tate and her daughter, Tabytha, long dreamed of opening a bakery and coffee shop; inspiration finally took hold when the pair took a trip to Paris in 2015.

In spring of 2016 they began remodeling the former Coast 101 building on Grant Avenue with a goal of opening The French Press Café in October of the same year. The shop opens early mornings through early afternoons, offering coffees and pastries along with breakfast like quiche and lunch like croque madames to people downtown and, hopefully, customers who travel to the area for the café.

I'm not sure how a coffee, sandwich, and a dried out cupcake totals to 30.00. I ordered the German chocolate cupcake and I got a carrot cake cupcake with German chocolate frosting. The sandwich was not toasted it was a cold crossiant with one slice of turkey, one piece of bacon, Guac, and ranch. I'm disappointed in the food, and expected more for the amount of money. They have a salad bar but to my amazement there wasn't a sneeze cover to cover the food. It's just pretty much out in the open.

review rating 5  This place has the best Americano I've ever had and the variety of menu options is insane (if you haven't tried an 1885, get over there ASAP). Starbucks who?

review rating 5  The French Press is a surprising change to the usual bill of fare found in Odessa. Sandwiches, & soup were fresh & tasty. The coffee was delicious & we were not robbed like at Starbucks for a cup of joe.

  • review rating 5  I had been following their page on FB and decided to stop by. Aaamazing! I had their special of the day which was turkey meatloaf with red potatoes...delicious! Customer service was excellent. I told the waitress upon ordering that I wanted something without meat and she remembered when she brought me my side salad. I love how attentive the staff was and loved the ambiance of the place. I encourage everyone to choose local and try this place out, you won't regret it.

Adorable place, the chicken spaghetti special with its yummy unique sauce was fantastic, the 1885 was also distinct in its delicious taste, the two desserts we shared were spot on (apple walnut bread and upside down pineapple cake), and the service was exceptional! Can’t recommend them enough!!!
