Our Story

Kristel Tate and her daughter, Tabytha, long dreamed of opening a bakery and coffee shop; inspiration finally took hold when the pair took a trip to Paris in 2015.

In spring of 2016 they began remodeling the former Coast 101 building on Grant Avenue with a goal of opening The French Press Café in October of the same year. The shop opens early mornings through early afternoons, offering coffees and pastries along with breakfast like quiche and lunch like croque madames to people downtown and, hopefully, customers who travel to the area for the café.

I have noticed that while the other downtown places serve greasy meals that just aren’t very good, they get way more business than French Press for lunch. The food on offer at French Press is always tasty, but there are some factors I think that could be improved on. Slightly larger portions for the current prices, or lower prices for the current portions would probably increase business. I work right down the street and eat out for lunch often, but I only find myself at the French Press a couple times a year for the following reasons: 1. Not much variety on the lunch menu 2. Prices are double what you pay at most lunch eateries ($3 for a cup of soup at McCallisters/Jason’s Deli, $6 at French Press) 3. Portions are so small, I usually leave hungry I’ve found that in order to satisfy my stomach, I have to get at least a sandwich AND soup. For an $8 sandwich and a $6 little cup of soup, $14 is a little up there for lunch in this area, and that doesn’t even include a beverage. If there were more options at lunch and more value for the money, my friends and I would probably eat here at least once or twice a week. I’m hoping your business will grow so I can afford to eat here more often!
