Our Story

Kristel Tate and her daughter, Tabytha, long dreamed of opening a bakery and coffee shop; inspiration finally took hold when the pair took a trip to Paris in 2015.

In spring of 2016 they began remodeling the former Coast 101 building on Grant Avenue with a goal of opening The French Press Café in October of the same year. The shop opens early mornings through early afternoons, offering coffees and pastries along with breakfast like quiche and lunch like croque madames to people downtown and, hopefully, customers who travel to the area for the café.

review rating 4  This place is very cute and I love the downtown location, as I work downtown! There is a greatly untapped lunch market downtown and I really want the French Press to cash in! I have noticed that while the other downtown places serve greasy meals that just aren’t very good, they get way more business than French Press for lunch. The food on offer at French Press is always tasty, but there are some factors I think that could be improved on. Slightly larger portions for the current prices, or lower prices for the current portions would probably increase business. I work right down the street and eat out for lunch often, but I only find myself at the French Press a couple times a year for the following reasons: 1. Not much variety on the lunch menu 2. Prices are double what you pay at most lunch eateries ($3 for a cup of soup at McCallisters/Jason’s Deli, $6 at French Press) 3. Portions are so small, I usually leave hungry I’ve found that in order to satisfy my stomach, I have to get at least a sandwich AND soup. For an $8 sandwich and a $6 little cup of soup, $14 is a little up there for lunch in this area, and that doesn’t even include a beverage. If there were more options at lunch and more value for the money, my friends and I would probably eat here at least once or twice a week. I’m hoping your business will grow so I can afford to eat here more often!

review rating 5  I had the mocha cappuccino and the carrot cake muffin and it was delicious and way cheaper than Starbucks and no long wait either! My mom got the quiche and a coffee and the tiramisu and that was really good too!!! We definitely found our new coffee spot!!!

  • review rating 3  The Valentine's dinner was okay tasted good. The harpists were talented saved the best for last the two ladies at the end should have played more. The ambiance was fabulous. But it was by no means worth $270.00.

  • review rating 0  Absolutely little to no effort on food preparation. Was not given an itemized receipt for what I ordered. I'm not sure how a coffee, sandwich, and a dried out cupcake totals to 30.00. I ordered the German chocolate cupcake and I got a carrot cake cupcake with German chocolate frosting. The sandwich was not toasted it was a cold crossiant with one slice of turkey, one piece of bacon, Guac, and ranch. I'm disappointed in the food, and expected more for the amount of money. They have a salad bar but to my amazement there wasn't a sneeze cover to cover the food. It's just pretty much out in the open.
